Your Kitchen improvement

Many people consider a well-organized kitchen to be one of the secrets to household happiness. However, if you have a busy family that's constantly on the go, you might find that keeping your kitchen organized can be a difficult and even daunting task. If you'd like to transform your disorganized kitchen into a more efficient and pleasant living space, why not start with the kitchen counter? Here are some easy tips you can use to organize your kitchen counter for everyday use.

Eliminate Clutter
A cluttered and disorganized kitchen can be a very difficult place in which to work. If your countertops are filled with clutter, you naturally don't have as much useful space in which to work. Clutter also tends to make a room look too small and "busy." In fact, countertop clutter can make even a large kitchen seem too small.
Eliminating unnecessary clutter should be the first step towards organizing your kitchen counter space. Start by removing any paper clutter, such as notes, unopened mail, school papers, or the daily newspaper. You should also remove any items that simply do not belong in the kitchen. Once these unnecessary items have been removed, it will be easier to decide upon an organizational strategy for the items you do use every day.

Countertops versus Cabinets
When organizing your kitchen, it's important to make a determination as to which items are best stored on the counter and which ones are best stored in the cabinets. In the case of small kitchen appliances or items that are used quite frequently, the countertop is often the best choice. However, if you only use your bread machine or yogurt maker on an occasional basis, storing it in the cabinet can free up a lot of countertop space. Take the time to carefully assess each item that you're currently storing on your kitchen counters. By finding alternate storage areas for infrequently used items, you'll have more countertop space available for everyday use.

Once you've stored your infrequently used items in the cabinets or pantry, you might decide to add a few new items to your countertop area. For example, if you're currently storing your spices in a cabinet, you might find that you'd use them more frequently if they were stored in a convenient spice rack on the countertop.

Baskets, Bins and Boxes
Baskets, bins and boxes can be the perfect solution when it comes to organizing your kitchen counter. For example, although you probably wouldn't want pencils, pens and note pads cluttering your countertop, it's hard to argue with the fact that they are all useful items. Instead of dealing with the clutter, tuck a pad of paper and a couple of pens into a small bin or basket. You'll be able to keep the items close at hand while still keeping your countertops organized and neat. Baskets and other containers that don't have lids can be convenient for items you need to grab quickly. However, lidded boxes and bins can go a long way towards reducing visual clutter, making your entire kitchen look more organized.

Tips to maximize kitchen space:-

Many of you probably have kitchens that are very small and are more than likely cluttered full of junk and there is practically no room to prepare your meals. Perhaps you have a ton of cookbooks that you cannot manage to put out of the way when you do not need them. Some tips can help.

Cabinets
The cabinets in your kitchen are the key storage unit. Use your cabinets and drawers wisely. With a little organization, you can make the maximum use of your cabinet space. Here are some tips to use your cabinet space efficiently.
1. Large cabinets with shelves that are above the countertop are mainly intended for your stoneware. Stoneware includes your plates, saucers, bowls, cups, mugs, and glasses. Use the shelves wisely. Stack your large plates together in one shelf corner of the cabinet. Usually, your large dinner plates are rather large and take a whole corner on one of your cabinet shelves.

Keep in mind, that your kitchen cabinets are intended for the stoneware that you use everyday. It is not the place to store your fine China or things that you usually reserve for fine dining when you have guests on special occasions. These items should not be stored in the kitchen, but in a display hutch in the dining room.
Likewise, your saucers and cups that go into your kitchen cabinets should be the ones that you use every day. Keep everything organized. Have your large plates on one shelf corner, small plates and saucers in another corner and your cups, mugs, and glasses in another. This way you will know where everything is and you will not need to look for everything.
2. The lazy Susan is a must in the kitchen. If you do not have one, you should have one installed. You can also find lazy Susan inserts that can fit right into your cabinets below the counter and in the pantry. You can even find lazy Susans that can fit on individual shelves in the pantry.
The lazy Susan is a great way to manage the space in your lower cabinets below the counter. The lazy Susan is a cabinet with rotating circular shelves or a stand with a free spinning shelf. It eliminates the need to rummage through your pantry to find that can of soup, spice, rice, etc. All you need to do is to store things on the rotating shelf and spin it around until you find what you are looking for.
3. The cabinet under the kitchen sink should not be used to store food. Traditionally the cabinet under the kitchen sink has always been reserved for household detergents, drain cleaner, oven cleaner, etc.

I understand that those of you with small children might have a concern that the kids could get into some of these detergents, many of which are highly toxic. If you do store detergents under the kitchen sink, like many do, find a small lock and chain strong enough to lock that cabinet when your small children are around.

Storing your cookbooks and recipes
Some of you have many cookbooks or different recipes that you have accumulated over the years or that you use to prepare meals on special occasions. If you have a refrigerator that has a top open without any cabinets on top, you should take two bookends and place your cookbooks on top of the refrigerator.
Otherwise, where ever you have wall space in your kitchen, install a shelf or a set of shelves for your cookbooks. For recipe cards, there are many boxes and Rolodexes that are specially made for recipes. You can store all your recipe cards neatly in an easy to get area.

Counter space
Your counter space is also very important. Try to keep most of your counter space free of any objects. If you have a few kitchen appliances, such as a mixer, food processor, etc. store them in a remote corner on your countertop out of the way of general cooking.

Let's try to answer some of those questions so you can get started on your way to an updated look.
If you are wondering what a good kit consists of, then here are a few tips for what you should look for in your kit.

  • Detailed instructions - the best countertop paint kits include detailed step by step instructions. Some higher end kits will also include a DVD of how-to's or you can access them from the company website.
  • Primer - After sanding and wiping down your countertop surface, good countertop paint kits include the primer coat.
  • Paint materials - Depending upon what color you are applying, your kit may include 1 paint color or three to four, particularly if you are trying to achieve a granite or marble effect.
  • Top coat - The final step that seals and protects your time and investment, the clear coat is applied as the last step and must be allowed to dry according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Application tools - foam applicators, sponges used to achieve specific effects such as mottled granite or rollers for applying the finishing top coat.
  • Phone numbers to call for help - many of the top manufacturers know that their products are targeted toward the do-it-yourself homeowner and that you may have questions throughout the process. Often helpful phone numbers are included in the instructions or on their website to provide the homeowner with helpful advice.
  • Warranty - Good countertop paint kits will consist of a warranty that stands behind the product to ensure that the paint and top coat performs as expected and as advertised.
Now that you know what a good countertop paint kit consists of, it's important that you also are aware of what is not included in these kits.

  • Drop cloths and painters tape - you will need to protect the surround surfaces as needed such as floors and walls with ample drop cloths and painters tape as needed. Don't forget to tape off back-splashes and adjoining walls to protect these surfaces from any countertop paint.
  • Clean-up materials - Follow manufacturer's instructions if specific clean up agents are needed beyond soap and water for countertop paint mishaps.
  • Recommended cleaner - For lasting shine and beauty of your new countertops, it is recommended that you purchase the countertop cleaner specifically designed to work with your manufacturers paint. Using non-suitable, more harsh, cleaning agents may ruin you final product and void your warranty.
